BSD questions

I'm thinking of taking over the lpr package, but I have some
questions about BSD sources.

For one thing, the lpr upstream source is obviously not the real
thing. It looks more like someone just took the old Debian sources
and added to them. Because of this, I'd like to get some new upstream
sources. However, I don't know which ones to choose. Should I use
FreeBSD, NetBSD or OpenBSD? And how can I figure out what version
I'm dealing with?

Thanks,
Adam Klein
