While not being the most active attendee, I trust switching to a monthly meeting is reasonable if people feel so. As you say, organizing ad hoc meetings when we need it is sensible.
Also I would vote for holding the meeting on the nth Friday/Sunday/whatever in a month, I imagine this would allow people to join more often (after an initial choice appealing to the majority).
