Debian helped to bring BOINC to OpenWrt
Dear all,
No idea if this is acceptable contribution to the Debian Covid-19
biohackathon, at least we used Debian (and only Debian) to bring the
BOINC package to the OpenWrt Router OS [1]. The idea is to have many
small machines contribute that are running 24/7. We have teamed up with
TN-GRID who are also studying a selection of Covid-19 associated gene
effects.
To run BOINC on your router :
* extend the /overlay with an external USB stick/SATA drive - can be
configured via the LuCI web interface
* opkg install boinc [2]
* boinccmd --project_attach http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/ \
"youraccounthashshownon http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/home.php"
We don't expect too much of an impact on the router's perfomance since
the I/O will be dealt with by hardware. We need to have a look at VPNs,
though - first thing to do after the lock-down. We gave our little
project its own github.io page [3], please leave an issue there in case
something unexpected happens.
Best,
Steffen
