I just have got an anser and included a full quote into my reply.

The f2c author thinks rewriting the critical part should be simple - I
can not judge about this statement but Keith was responding quite
quickly and seems to be helpfull enough to give an even more precise
hint even if he admitted that he would not personally write the code.
