Staden Package and trev, its sequence viewer.

Dear all,

I am making a list of software of special relevance to molecular and
computational biology, and it appears that there are only two free
viewers for sequence traces, abiview and trev.

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianSequenceAnalysis

Abiview is part of the emboss package, and an unofficial debian package
is available. Unfortunately its GUI is very limited.

On the other hand, trev, the viewer of the Staden package, has a better
GUI, but is not packaged yet.

Staden is something very big, and packaging it may not be
straigtforward. On the other hand, I think that its presence in Debian
would be very rewarding.

Definitely, packaging Staden does not look like something for beginners.
But as a molecular biologist, I can help with testing the packages with
some real-life data of mine.

I will crosspost this mail on debian-science as well, so that
non-biologist debian developpers can hear the call for packaging. (would
filling a formal RFP make sense ?) I think that it is better to reply on
debian-med, as it is there where the thread was started.

Best regards,
