This *is* controversial. DICOM has evolved into a standard
for how to store, transmit, encode, operate on, manage and
handle workflow of and with medical data, mainly imaging
related.

"DICOM support" is a rather stretchable term, from
implementing worklist support to RIS to simply being able to
open and display DICOM packaged digital X ray pictures for
display at peripheral (read community) doctors' desktops.

I wonder whether a basic distinction between
research-related packages and applied medicine should be
done. Eg there's theoretic and applied physics. Same with
medicine. The key question per package would be: Is it's
main intended use practicising medicine or research in the
field ? Some things (such as DICOM) may be considered
cross-category as they are fairly neutral in intent.
