Please file bug reports or something against the 3rd party apps' vendors. Ubuntu is dropping libappindicator, soonish, too. Debian has already dropped it.
I am still hesitant to add those compatibility symlinks, but I might for a while, in fact. I'll revisit this after X-mas.
