An alternative to the mysql-common-5.5 package would be to provide two
alternatives to the cnf files from a single mysql-common package, one
for 5.1 and one for 5.5 and call update-alternatives accordingly. I
think mysql-5.6 does something related.

But, this would be worth the effort?
