If changing it, please make it configurable. I *hate* it on the far
right. On a wide screen, the status and the rest of the text are far
apart, which makes reading it harder. Having the status on the left,
closer to the message itself is much easier to read at a glance, in my
opinion.

That the rest of the world does it wrong is no reason for us to follow,
when it can be done right >;)
