Re: accessibility like speech and braille in the debian live console and desktop images

Hi, What about s for the installation with speech and l for the live disc with speech? We could also have s for the live disc with speech and i for the installation but having the s for the installation might be best but if users don't know about that shortcut then having s for the live system and i for the installation might be best as it is a live system. Are there already boot options for loading the entire disc into ram so the disc could be removed as if not these should be added for both the live disc and installer targets with speech for speed and performance? Hi, I am trying to make the live debian images with the installer accessible

The gnome desktop image can already be tested, by pressing super-meta-s
after boot. Testing other desktops is a matter of getting them to
integrate such of shortcut in their desktops. You're welcome to start
the discussion with the respective desktop teams to reach that goal :)
(it's useful not only for live images, but also installed images, the
ultimate goal is that any installed Debian system, whatever its desktop,
can talk by just pressing this shortcut).

Having the images beep at the boot prompt as the stable images do
Isn't that already the case?

What would it take for you to add espeakup and or orca to the live
images
For one, it would take deciding what it should look like. For instance:

adding a boot option like "s" for speech would be very helpful
Note that the live CD image can also behave like an installer image. For
the installer images, "s" is already taken for installing with speech.
Do we want to steal that shortcut for the live-with-speech case?
What shortcut would we use for the install-with-speech then? Or, if
we don't steal the shortcut, what shortcut should we use for the
live-with-speech? It has to be carefully chosen, because we do not want
to change it later, since that would bring confusion to users.

The thing is that the live should include brltty and,
It seems the live images currently lack it. debian-live people, could
you add it to the list of packages?

indeed, a key to enable speakup just like the installer does.

So yes, beep and "s" is a good idea. This "s" should also enable Orca
automatically at boot of the DE.
But the user will probably want to be able to decide, with shortcuts,
between a console interface and a desktop interface. See, we again need
to carefully choose them.

So to summarize what we currently have:

- on the install cd, just pressing enter gets braille support
- on the install cd, pressing s enter gets speech support
- on the live cd, pressing enter gets the graphical desktop, from where
   super-alt-s starts the screen reader
- on the live cd, pressing i enter gets the installer with braille support

AIUI, what we'd want additionally is:

- get a live console (with brltty and/or speech support)
- get the speech-enabled installer
- make the installer-started-from-live accessible

The former needs to be discussed with the debian live people: AIUI, they
never implemented it, so it needs to be worked on, to get login sprung
on VTs, etc. The live image also additionally needs the brltty and
espeakup packages.

The second is already implemented, it's only a matter of adding a
shortcut in the boot menu, but as mentioned above, we need to chose it
carefully according to what we'll want for the live-boot shortcuts.

About the install process, it means that running it from the desktop
should, if Orca is enabled, run the text one. If braille is enabled,
ncurses one should be run. Otherwise, the classical graphical one, which
is not accessible today.
Well, that case is not necessarily the most urging: the user can just
reboot the CD, and boot the speech-enabled installer.

That said, work has been done to that end. IIRC it's almost there, see
bug #816705

I want to make is to make sure that accessibility is also added into
standard live builds with the debian live builder scripts
Yes, sure, there is no reason why the standard image shouldn't be made
accessible. And then any other image produce with the same scripts will
be.

One option I would like to see is an option to boot the disc and load
it into ram so the disc could be removed from the drive and the entire
system could run from ram to speed up the processes of using the live
system and installation.
That's interesting, but actually unrelated with accessibility :) That
should be brought directly to the debian live team in a separate thread.
