Whats wrong with gmd3/gnome in Debian stretch?

Hi all

With Debian 9 in freeze I thought I should try out Debian Live for the
upcoming version.

Building a Debian 9 ISO for KDE like this worked great:

# lb config
# echo "kde-plasma-desktop" >  config/package-lists/my.list.chroot
# lb build

Unfortunately, trying the same for GNOME like this:

# lb config
# echo "gnome" >  config/package-lists/my.list.chroot
# lb build

...produced an ISO image where the GNOME desktop doesn't appear but gdm3
just keeps crashing for quite a while until the system drops to a text
console.

I tested both ISO files in VirtualBox. Can you reproduce the problem or
is there something broken in my setup?
