I have finally got things calmed down I ought to be able to make time sometime in the next two weeks to work on this and do some personal live image stuff (i.e. actually use live-build). I also plan on further investigating the apt thing that causes 'suggests' to end up in the image - from what I remember from the discussion is that apparently apt doesn't remove suggests if they have added by a package pulled in by a recommends later removed (i.e. if something causes a package to be added but later gets pruned, the pruning doesn't prune suggests).
