 --archive-areas  "main contrib non-free" 
is the option you want in your lb config command.
look at "man lb config" and the manual for live build at
http://live.debian.net/   for other options and how to add additional packages.

Thanks for the reply.  Can't do it with live-build, as apparently it can
pull packages only from main.  Nonfree firmware, of course, is in nonfree.

The ISO there is exactly the same as the one at live.debian.org, and does
not include the nonfree firmware, even though it says it does.
