Apparently for all that I have been using Debian for years (but am not a
developer or hard core) there are still lots of things for me to learn.
 I didn't know about either aptitude why or debtree.

In any event aptitude why says:

i  amanda-client Suggests gnuplot


which give credence to my theory that there is bug.
