Ok, so IFF there is a bug it is in apt. I still suspect a bug because NONE of the Recommends on or Depends packages for gnuplot are shown as being installed - unless live-build supresses some messages from apt showing packages being installed there is no immediate ancestor of gnuplot being installed. The build.log,which AIUI should show output from apt for all packages being installed into the image shows not a single one of the only packages which aptitude reports as Depends or Recommends On gnuplot. I was unaware of debtree so I will definitely look into that and see if it gives any clues.
