That's true. But then you have to remember to always upgrade the preferences
file *manually* when the version of one of the pinned packages changes.
This burden is taken off your shoulders with the the pinning hook, it does
this *automatically* for you: it just adds the packages to pin with their
current version number of the current build to the apt preferences file.

Kernel upgrades are *prevented* by the pinning hook. They can no longer happen
and therefore they can no longer fail. That's the whole idea of the pinning
hook.
