the described behaviour is the one that it should do in debian mode. if you want a different behaviour for ubuntu, then make it conditional on ubuntu mode; but then i don't really understand what you're 'fixing' in lb_binary_syslinux in the first place.

I submitted a patch a long time ago to make it not number the first kernel + initrd which was accepted. Why is this no longer the desired behavior anymore?

I fixed the numbering; It was completely broken before.
