i'm changing the layouts a bit in order to be consistent and more flexible for the future. it's still flaky and might be not fast-forward until settled. i'll clean it up and document it for the 2.0~a$something uploads mid next week.

mainline is always the default branch (the one you'll end up after a simple clone).
