Generally it's a bug in VirtualBox for not providing some sane
graphics interface.
You can get a sane resolution by decreasing the amount of video memory
for the virtual machine.
You can also use the vesa framebuffer, set the resolution with video=
kernel option, and use the fbdev X driver.
The X vesa driver does not allow changing resolution while X is
running but you might be able to set it on X start with a parameter of
the live kernel command line (see parameters.txt on your CD).
