if you would only enable debian-installer, this would result in an live
image with additional debian-installer on it. however, that
debian-installer part would not install the debian-live system, but a
regular debian system as if there would be no debian-live at all.

if you want the 'ubuntu' like installation, you also need to install
(and enable) live-installer; the udeb hack for d-i to use install the
squashfs image to the harddisk rather than bootstrapping from .deb
packages. it still has a weird bug with grub-installer, though this is
work in progress and hopefully sorted out soon.
