put img in a usb with dd?

As a temporary workaround, I have in the past created a FAT
filesystem on my thumbdrive, copied the contents of binary/ on there
and manually made the thing bootable using syslinux. Haven't had any
problems with that approach this far.
I wonder whether *parted would work...
