Package: lintian
Severity: important

Greetings,

babel 0.8.6 was just rejected due to contrib dependencies, when lintian
said it was clean. Upstream's modifications changed the deps from
libxerces-java in main to libxerces2-java and libxalan2-java, both of
which are in contrib. I'm glad ftpmaster caught this...

I think lintian should provide this functionality, which is pretty
essential to Debian's legality, particularly when some packages move
from main to contrib on a version change!

Zeen,

This is one of the bugs against Lintian that was left open and marked
[external] and wontfix to serve as an idea for other packages, but we do
already have other scripts that check for these sorts of dependencies now
(and new techniques like pbuilder builds). Since Lintian by design
doesn't do this sort of check, I don't think there's much purpose served
in leaving the bug open and tagged wontfix. I'm therefore closing it.
