I also agree xdgsu is the way to go. If it was revived upstream we wouldn't need
to locally patch desktop files, they could be changed upstream, and even the
.desktop files standards recommend the use of xdgsu rather than $suwrapper.

I asked about it in 2008 [1], but got no reply.
