What to do about source-contains-CVS-dir?

What are the lintian maintainers' words of advice about dealing with
source-contains-CVS-dir? Clearly, this is not desirable, but am I
supposed to rewrap the source tarball? In the overall scheme of
things, this seems like a worse solution than a few extra files in the
source tarball. (Think about traceability etc.) The lintian advice
currently contains "Export from CVS rather than use a checkout.",
ignoring the fact that in most cases, it's not the Debian packager that
deals with making the source tarball. What is a packager to do?
