Sage cannot use GAP itself because GAP does not come with its own SO share library:
my understanding is that, on the GAP side, work towards this direction is in progress.
GAP is a huge machinery with it own kernel, libGAP is a kind of wrapper that allows
you to have access to this kernel from your own C/C++/Cython code: I guess it is the best
solution figured out by the Sage[Math] Development Team.

I will try to transform the source of the source within the building process.
It might be a little tricky because the upstream maintainer only distributed within
the source ball the transformed source and a dummy version of the script use for the
transformation. On the other hand, all the material is available in the GIT repository.
So I guess I have merely to work with the GIT material rather than with the source ball
material. Meanwhile I will try to discuss with the upstream maintainer in view to ease
the process.
