The image will *literally* be created like this:

debootstrap lenny debian
tar cvjf debian.tar.bz2 debian

Nothing more complicated. It's not even going to be a derivative work;
it's an auxiliary download.

Unfortunately that's an infeasible amount of work --- it's a non-trivial
amount of scripting, and sufficiently difficult that it's just not worth
it given that I'm only doing this for convenience.

What are my alternatives? Is there a standalone,
one-static-binary-with-no-dependencies-whatsoever version of
cdebootstrap I can give my users?

Also, I see that lots of software distributes Debian images --- for
example, Colinux (http://sourceforge.net/projects/colinux/files/). How
are they doing it legally, or is it just that nobody actually cares?
