Hmm... I'd have expected them to be viewed as translations of the original.

Fortunately, even if you are correct, most of the potentially contested works 
would likely have to be translated from English to Portugese, so they'll 
probably still be derivatives of GPLed works.

And, even if that's not the case, the development process itself would
tend to guarantee that any significant GPLed works are derivatives of
other GPLed works.

So you'd still be allowed to distribute them.
