Not the same thing. That one expands to "Do not complain that your
apple makes a poor orange", or some variation on the theme. It is not
meant to imply that the two things cannot be compared - rather, it
indicates that the _goals_ are different, and that this is the reason
for the observed difference. Equivalent would be "Yes, they are
different, and your point is...?".

If the German variation really does mean "These things cannot be
fairly compared", then that would explain a lot of confusion I have
seen regarding this idiom.
