As Steve Greenland says the only thing that solves the problem is
effectively a relicensing. You could get the author to tweak the
existing license to allow modification or just get him to use a
license that everybody knows.
The reason to suggest the 2-clause BSD-license over other licenses is
that it is the closest to the existitng license.
