copyright in one sourcefile of dcd

HI folks,

i just took over the dcd package and looked through the files
for copyright notices due to the old copyright file made by the
former maintainer. in this copyright a file is mentioned which is
"public domain software". i don't know what's the way debian
handles this. below are the relevant comments from the source
code about copyright:

<quote>

/* NIST Secure Hash Algorithm */
/* heavily modified by Uwe Hollerbach <uh@alumni.caltech edu> */
/* from Peter C. Gutmann's implementation as found in */
/* Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier */
/* Further modifications to include the "UNRAVEL" stuff, below */

/* This code is in the public domain */

</quote>

maybe someone can tell me in how far this is free/non-free. well
i don't know bruce schneier's AC and therefore i don't know what
one can do with code from schneier's book maybe someone else
knows.

thanks and so long
Othmar
