Re: Running Debian on a MacBookPro12,1

1. I have a bootable USB of whatever the most recent OS X version is because it can be a bit of a pain getting a copy of OS X without OS X. I would at least do that if you don't dual boot, although admitted 2+ years after release it's questionable how many essential firmware patches are really coming out.

You can create a backup medium of OS X by using a (probably closed source) OS X tool called Diskmaker X (formerly called Lion Diskmaker) at http://diskmakerx.com/, which grabs a copy of OS X directly from the Apple Store. There is also a method using the raw Apple Store install dmg and dd or whatever equivalent GUI apps at http://www.mactrast.com/2012/07/how-to-create-a-physical-backup-of-the-os-x-mountain-lion-installer/ which I think still works but haven't tested as of late.

2. With the non-free repo enabled my MD101 MBP (2011? 2013?) seems to run Jesse stable without any issues. Without non-free enabled the built-in wifi was entirely borked, but the computer was still fairly usable with an ethernet cable or a FOSS friendly USB wifi dongle. Not sure how well that would translate to your specific install.

Also as a side-note, dual booting works fairly well but OS X updates can sometimes break things (which might be another case for running mono-boot linux). Most recently the Mavericks to Yosemite upgrade left my laptop booting by default to OSX only instead of to the boot selector. The fix was to reinstall the boot loader partition using rEFInd (a FOSS tool), after which my linux install was happily waiting for me and fully functional.

I am running stretch on my macbook air without problems, the only issue is the broadcom driver for the WiFi, the rest seems to work well (including keyboard light, screen brightness, natural scrolling, but I can't confirm hibernation since I don't use it)

I don't not have a dual-boot system, only Debian since the SSD is only 128GB, and I don't need mac's

Battery life is less than 8 hours, but I use Gnome with full brightness so a less hungry DE might give more time

And Jessie also works on this device.

Hooe this is useful since it's not the exact same hardware.

Hello Guys,
I want to install Debian on my (MacBookPro12,1)  early 2015. I have been reading and In the wiki its reported that “Debian Stretch runs very well on this version of the MacBook Pro.” However its also recommended that macOS is kept on the side for firmware update. The main questions are

1- If somebody already have installed Debian on this device WITHOUT keeping a copy of macOS
2- If anyone that is running this setup can list what is not working (such as function keys, hibernate, etc..)
3- How much the battery will last? can we get ~8hrs running Debian?

Basically since Stretch is frozen now, I would love to wipe MacOS and replace it with stretch as soon as its release.

Any  advice is greatly appreciated.
