Try this Cheryl,
edit /etc/default/grub and add "acpi_osi=Linux" to the boot arguments, e.g.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi_osi=Linux"
Then run
"update-grub"
and reboot.
I had to do this on my R500 Lenovo to get multimedia keys working on Debian Sid. HTH.
