Do you remember the time where you had to declare video timing for each
resolution manually? Do you remember the time where you had to modify
/etc/modules to declare each and every single required module?
Do you miss that?

Xorg detects reasonable defaults (or "it" should be fixed). Configuring
xorg.conf is only needed to manualy override those default values, IMHO.
