Well, thank you for that, Damián. But it didn't help. I tried using a
mode that is listed -- to replace it, as you say. Perhaps there is
something else that needs to be done other than editing the
defaults/915resolution file in order to register the change. I also tried
using an unused mode name as the comment in the file suggests one should
use 915resolution -l to find an unused mode. Neither helped. And
915resolution -l always shows the same list with no variation caused by
the config in /etc/default.
Interestingly, I see from the xorg log that it recognises the screen very
precisely:

It then goes on to list all the specs of the modes that 915resolution -l
lists, taking 42 lines for each one, but not adding the resolution from
the /etc/default file. And finally, it says
