Fujitsu P7120 experiences

I am trying to get a system installed on a Fujutsu P7120 notebook, but so
far have not achieved 100% success with any of the distributions I have
tried.

My experience has been as follows:

1. Ubuntu 5.04 (kernel 2.6.10-6-386)
Installation completes but leaves non-working X display
X - i810 not working, only works with vesa in 1024x768 resolution
	Sound - not working
	LAN - works fine
	Wireless - works fine
	CD/DVD - works fine
2. Ubuntu 5.10 (kernel 2.6.12-10-386)
	Installation completes
	X - i810 now working, but only 1024x768 resolution (should be 1280x768)
	Sound - works fine
	LAN - works fine
	Wirelsess - works fine
CD/DVD - works during install, then not found :-/
3. Debian Etch (20060304)
Install fails at the 'Detect and mount CD-ROM' stage with
"No common CD-ROM drive was detected"

Has anyone any idea what problem Debian install (and Ubuntu 5.10 post install)
has with this CD/DVD drive, and what I can try to get around it?

On Ubuntu 5.04 which does find it, dmesg reports:

Not sure if that contains the necessary clue, but the 'Assertion failed' message
looks suspicious.

So far I have not gotten far enough with the Debian install to get the dmesg
output.

I havn't tried unstable yet - I suppose that should be next.
