My laptop is not brand new, but all I had to do to get Xorg working with 
1280x800 was add a modeline on the monitor section of my xorg.conf:

ModeLine    "1280x800" 83.9 1280 1312 1624 1656 800 816 824 841

You can try and let us know how it goes...
