Try goobox. If that works, it means your laptop doesnt have an audio
cable between the cdrom drive and the sound card, meaning that software
has to operate as if it was ripping the CD to be able to play it.
Adjusting the "CD" volume in your volume controls will be inefficient in
such a scenario, since it adjusts the volume for that internal audio input
that is not present...
That's typical on laptops.
