Does anyone know a good site which runs through the make menuconfig
options for a newbie? I still need to know which options are needed
for the ipw2200 and WPA/WEP.
You need "Networking > Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack" and its
sub-options (WEP, CCMP, TKIP) and "Device Drivers > Network Device
Support > Wireless LAN (non-hamradio) > Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and
2915ABG Network Connection". (I don't have my laptop here at the moment,
therefore I might have forgotten something.)
I don't think that you have to compile your own kernel, though. The
stock Debian 2.6.15 kernel comes with all these modules. Just install
the appropriate linux-image-2.6.15, boot into it and try "modprobe
ipw2200". See also the bottom third of this old post:

The packages "wpasupplicant" and "wpagui" are very useful for
configuring WPA-related behavior.
