Hmm, on december the 20. ? I assume then you are on a stable version of debian? or not on debian at all?
if you really are at debian then you should have a file called /etc/debian_version. On the command-line
try cat /etc/debian_version. If you see something similar to this:

mh@phoenix:/home/mh% cat /etc/debian_version
testing/unstable

then you indeed are on debian and you can tell us which version of debian you are running.

This problem is most likely to occur (but not necessarily) after I've done a file search or completed a download. It has also happed three times while merely surfing the internet. This problem does not happen when I boot into Windows.

This could be likly the problem with the X server (the base of the graphical environment) has been upgraded to a new major Version in unstable... if you are on unstable. The best thing maybe would be to try if it freezes and you still can type to do 'dmesg | tail -n 30 | tee crash.log' and then have a look at the output of this and maybe attach it to here. (for explaination, dmesg prints the kernel message buffer. Good possibility to find errors there.). Another logging facility would be /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see for errors. Maybe you try something like this "egrep '^\((EE|WW)\)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log > crash_X.log" and attach us this crash_X.log file.

So i don't think it should happen while you boot on windows unless it's an hardware problem, which i guess we can exclude here.

But if I have the command line prompt also running I can usually use that (although this has also locked up a couple of times). Sometimes I can get as far as executing the reboot command, only to have it lock up as it is trying to reboot.

As said, sounds pretty much like an X bug. Can you switch to the virtual consoles 1 - 6 using ctrl-alt-f1 to ctrl-alt-f6 ? (ctrl-alt-f7 should bring you back to X).

See above.

should work anyway.
