Well, that's not exactly true.. make-kpkg will happily create an initrd
for you.  apt-get install kernel-package if you haven't already,
it's a must when building a kernel on a debian system.

I think the one you'll find you're having problems with is likely:

DRM_GAMMA


Just turn it off if you don't need it.
