Asus M6700N

Plus:
+ great screen with 1280x800 resolution
+ price
+ SpeedStep works OK
+ 4h battery life

Minus:
- height weight
- CPU Throttling does not work
- Linux hangs after using standby, suspend to ram, suspend to disk
- Mandrake Linux is not working (installer does not even start), Fedora & Suse works great
Well, I have M6700Ne - a newer version of Asus great notebooks.

+it's not heavy, only 2.6kg
+CPU Throttling works
+Standby (suspend to disk) works, i didn't tried suspend to ram as I don't need that (well you can have problems with ATI's driver - close sourced, the XFree86/X.org one works well, you can get it working with ATI's one too, but ...)

-Well I can't use WPA under Linux with IPW2200 - all centrino notebooks have this problems (or my router sucks :-)
-You have to patch kernel to get Baterry status, as ASUS's BIOS sucks
-You have to disable lapic (kernel param nolapic) to get everything work the right way

There is a great linux forum for this notebook.

Well, if it's good for your tasks - i suppose that the burner is not so fast as you wish and the disk is slow (4200 rpm). Maybe you should check for dealers, where you can configure every part of system.
