Can't boot 2.6.?? kernels - Acer TravelMate 4651LMi

Hi,

Last week I mentioned my intention to buy this machine, which I duly
did.

I'm dual-booting with the Devil's OS and a clean install of stable via
the distribution DVDs, and grub as boot loader. My intention is to get
to testing, asap.

The install all went pretty smoothly, except that the 2.6.8 kernel
supplied with stable would not boot. I'm therefore stuck on 2.4.27 and
the non-stop fan noise. Boo! I also downloaded and installed 2.6.12, but
that also fails to boot. Hiss!

The boot failure symptoms are that right after grub, the grub lines are
displayed, then
.
# boot
# Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

Nada. Hit the hard button.

Knoppix similarly fails to boot without any cheatcodes, but does boot
with the addition of:
# acpi=off

That seems like a pretty good clue.

So, I added this to the grub kernel line. This allowed the kernel to
start, but the boot halted a little later with
# /sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
# Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init!

That last line made me laugh!

However, I'm not a kernel compile kind of guy - although, I know I'm
about to become one - so I'm not sure what I should do next. I've
googled about, but any info I find immediately attains gobblygook status
and my head crashes to the desk.

For example:
http://gaugusch.at/kernel.shtml
http://localhost.ruhr.de/~stefan/acerTM292/

Any pointers would be appreciated.
