I'm adding my name on the list of people having this
switch-to-external-display inconvenience.
I am running a 2.6.8 kernel on a Dell Inspiron 510m with an Intel
i855GM. My i830 stuff is compiled inside the kernel.
XFree86 version 4.3.0.1, X11R6.6.
