are you using lilo? I got this error message, when I had lilo pointing
to the wrong disk (I changed the disk from /dev/hdX to /dev/hdY). I had
to boot from something else (a CD in my case) and chroot to the
partition I want to boot, rerun lilo and everything went fine.
