I've submitted a bug to the debian system (Bug#308495) regarding thissituation. The basic problem is as the subject line says: the display is left on after the machine to put to sleep. It displays what looksto be the console messages in single user mode display. pmud worked just fine with woody installed (debian 3.0) but is broken for sarge. With crucial help from Ben Herrenschmidt, the problem has been associated with the 2.6.8 kernel. We substituted a newer kernel (2.6.12-rc4) and it now works okay. Note: the "aty128fb" or "radeonfb" video drivers for the kernel must be invoked during kernel boot for the old iBooks.
