Ok. I did two things, and it started working.
1. I went into the kde control panel, disabled - applied - enabled -
applied the arts soundsystem.
2. I put the headphone cable into the laptop directly (was in the port
in my dock) - it used to work there, so I know that this alone was not
the issue. Plus I did this earlier in my troubleshooting process, and it
still did not work. Question is, how many different things did I try
before I moved the cable this time? Who knows!

Now it works, and I don't care why!
