I followed your directions and now glxinfo says:
direct rendering: yes
I tested atlantis opengl xscreensaver and got 17 FPS in full screen 1024x768.
Just in case this is my glxgears output:
915 frames in 5.0 seconds = 183.300 FPS in a window
177 frames in 5.0 seconds = 35.400 FPS in full screen 1024x768

I confronted mine with yours and noticed two differences:
1. DefaultDepth 16 (mine is 24)
2. Section "Device"
you don't have Option "UseFBDev" "true"

After changing defaultdepth to 16 I got some differences with glxgears:
1504 frames in 5.0 seconds = 300.800 FPS in a window
284 frames in 5.0 seconds = 56.800 FPS in full screeen 1024x768

Is it worthwile to stay down to 16 dpp ??
I have also noticed in /var/log the following error:
(WW)ATI(0):Failed to set up write-combining range
Do you have the same error?
