I do not have any ALSA packages installed on my old Thinkpad and I have sound
using kernel 2.6.8 Should I install ALSA packages? When I tried to do it,
I got the same errors as the original poster. I discovered that I did not
need ALSA packages and all I needed to do to get sound to work was disable
Arts sound system in KDE.
