RE: problems getting static ip to work
Thank you. I got it to work.
I had to remove the "eth0" line and and the lines below it.
Now I don't get the overflow error and IMAP seems to work fine..

This is invalid. The 'eth0' on its own line shouldn't be there. The
rest is OK:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.2.6
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.2.0
gateway 192.168.2.1

Try eliminating the 'network' line from the eth0 iface definition.
