You have to change the Section "Screen" in Your XF86Config-4:
SubSection "Display"
        Depth           16
        Modes           "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

This should work for Your Laptop with 16 bit color depth.

For Your external Monitor I would suggest an entry like:
SubSection "Display"
        Depth           16
        Modes           "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection

Check Your default color depth. It is:
DefaultDepth    16

If 16 bit works correctly, You may want to try if it looks better with 24 
bit. ;))
